He is a clinical and laboratory haematologist trained at Hammersmith Hospital (Royal Post Graduate Medical School) and The Royal Free Hospital London.
At RPH, he has furthered development of new molecular techniques for diagnosing and managing haematological disease and contributed to the development of patient blood management programs in WA, improving patient outcomes and reducing blood product waste and costs. He has been active in researching immune response to COVID-19 vaccination in haematology patients.
He is the Network Director of East Metropolitan Health Service PathWest Laboratory Medicine and Clinical Professor at the Schools of Pharmacology and Medicine and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Western Australia.
Dr Peter Tan
Dr Tan is a specialist physician in haematology and pathology who specialises in oncology while also treating general conditions including thrombosis and haemostasis disorders.
He is committed to making new therapies available to patients. Aware that a blood disorder diagnosis is a concerning time for patients and their families, he aims to demystify treatment and take exceptional care of patients through the long-term.
Dr Tan, who completed his advanced training in Melbourne and Sydney, is the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials and co-investigator for trials run by the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group. He has a particular interest in research, and acute malignancies such as acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
In addition to his teaching commitments, and clinical work in the public and private sectors, he has won multiple awards here and overseas for his work and is regularly invited to speak at conferences. He has authored many papers in the fields of AML and myelodysplastic syndromes.
Dr Tony Calogero
Dr Calogero is a dual-trained clinical and laboratory haematologist who consults to Royal Perth Hospital and SJOG Midland Public and Private Hospital.
Following his training at the University of Western Australia he was part of an Alfred Hospital/ Monash University Myeloma research group.
His roles as Clinical Lead of Haematology for the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network and Director of Haematology for WA Country Health Service reflect his interest in ensuring equity of access to cancer care and provision of haematology/oncology care to rural and remote patients.
Dr Calogero has a broad range of expertise in both malignant and non-malignant haematology, with special clinical interests in multiple Myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms and thrombosis/haemostasis.
His academic interests lay particularly in the teaching of undergraduate health professionals, as well as junior doctors.
Dr Ben Carnley
Dr Ben Carnley specialises in adult haematology with interest areas in myelodysplasia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma and is responsible for multiple clinical trials studying paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria at Royal Perth Hospital. He has worked both overseas and throughout regional areas of Western Australia.
He has been directly involved in the development of scientific research protocols and has spearheaded multiple quality assurance projects at our site.
Dr Carnley is the Director of Cell and Tissue Therapies WA who in conjunction with RPH provide specialist stem cell treatment for patients throughout the State.
He is the WA Councillor for the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand and is the Australian Clinical Laboratories Clinical Director of Haematology (WA).
Dr Carnley graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1994 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. The Royal Australian College of Physicians accepted Dr Carnley as a fellow in 2004 and in 2005 Dr Carnley became a member of the Royal College of Pathologists.
Dr Hun Chuah
Dr Chuah is a clinician-scientist haematologist who is completing his PhD. His expertise is in liquid biopsy in acute myeloid leukaemia, myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloproliferative neoplasm. He specialises in translational research that overcomes important clinical challenges using laboratory innovations, to improve the outcome for patients suffering from haematological malignancies.
Throughout his PhD, Dr Chuah has been actively involved in method development in the genomic analysis of blood cancers, and developing ultra-sensitive genomic tools to detect variants at low limits of detection. He is also an integral member of the University of Western Australia research team that achieved the WA cytogenomic invention.
In clinical research, Dr Chuah is the principle investigator and associate investigator for a range of clinical trials at Royal Perth Hospital. These include trials evaluating role of novel therapies across a range of haematological malignancies, including myeloid, lymphoma and myeloma.
Associate Professor Agnes Yong
Dr Yong trained in medicine at the Queen’s University of Belfast, UK. Following advanced training in Clinical and Laboratory Haematology, and blood and marrow transplantation in London at the Hammersmith Hospital, she embarked on research on chronic myeloid leukaemia and obtained her PhD from Imperial College, University of London.
After post-doctoral research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, she moved to Australia in 2010 consulting at the Royal Adelaide Hospital before moving to Perth in 2019. She has interests in chronic myeloid leukaemia, haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and survivorship.
As well as interests in clinical research in myeloma, leukaemia and lymphoma, she enjoys teaching and mentoring, and is a recipient of the Professor Derek Frewin AO citation for excellence in clinical teaching. She has multiple publications in chronic myeloid leukaemia and transplantation and is Associate Editor of the British Journal of Haematology and Frontiers in immunology.
