Neurology

Neurology is a medical specialty dealing with disorders of the nervous system.  The department also provides diagnostic, pre-surgical and surgical (intra-op spinal) neurophysiology services.

Our services include:

  • 24-hour Emergency Department and inpatient consultation services. 
  • Inpatient general neurology services.
  • Acute stroke service.
  • Outpatient neurology clinics, including telehealth consultations.
  • Comprehensive neurophysiology services including EEG, EMG, EP studies. 

Dr Carolyn Orr

Dr Carolyn Orr trained at the University of Glasgow, qualified as a physician and neurologist in Sydney, and has a PhD from the University of New South Wales in Parkinson’s disease. She did fellowships in Movement Disorder and Behavioural Neurology at the Mayo Clinic, USA. She has worked as a consultant and teacher since 2009 and has been based at Royal Perth Hospital since 2016.  Her main professional interest is in cognitive neurology (disorders of thinking, behaviour and language). She does research in neurodegenerative disease (including fronto-temporal dementia, Huntington's disease and Alzheimer’s disease). She is passionate about the links between human health and our environment. 

Dr Lay Kun Kho

Dr Kho graduated from the University of Sydney and completed her neurology advanced training in Western Australia. With subspecialty interest in stroke and neurorehabilitation, she currently leads the Stroke Unit at Royal Perth Hospital and previously served as Head of the Neurorehabilitation Unit at RPH Shenton Park and the State Rehabilitation Service Fiona Stanley Hospital. She also spent five years working overseas as a neurologist in areas of need, reflecting her commitment to multidisciplinary and holistic patient centred care. 

Dr Wai K Leong

Dr Leong graduated from University of Western Australia, and completed specialist neurology training in WA, with further experience at the West London Neurosciences Centre at Charing Cross, London, UK and the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, UK.  She has worked as consultant neurologist at RPH Neurology since 2003, and as head of department since 2011.  She has wide experience in general neurology and participates in the WA state-wide telestroke service.  She has additional subspecialty expertise in neuromuscular disease, neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis.  She is active in neurology education in the ANZAN WA neurology advanced training committee and provides training and supervision of advanced and basic trainees, and mentors medical students.

Dr Ron Manasseh

Dr Manasseh is a general Neurologist with a special interest in EMG, Botulinum toxin injections and neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring for spinal surgery.  He trained in Perth and then completed an Overseas Neurology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 2006-2007.  He is involved in General Neurology, EMG and Botulinum toxin injection clinics, and also provides neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring for spinal scoliosis surgery."

Dr Catherine Franconi

Dr Catherine Franconi is a consultant neurologist with a special interest in general neurology, telemedicine and acute care.  She qualified from University of Western Australia in 1997. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Australian New Zealand Association of Neurologists.

Dr John Dunne

Dr John Dunne graduated from the University of Western Australia, trained in neurology at RPH, and then undertook EEG, Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowships at the Mayo Clinic, USA. He is a Clinical Professor, Medical School, University of Western Australia. He instigated WA Comprehensive Epilepsy, Intraoperative neural monitoring, and botulinum toxin treatment services. He is committed to epilepsy care and clinical neurophysiology services and to teaching nationally and internationally, particularly throughout the Asian and Oceanic region. 

Dr Delara Javat

Dr Delara Javat is a consultant neurologist. She graduated from James Cook University, Queensland. She completed basic physician training in WA and specialist Neurology training across ACT/NSW. She completed movement disorders fellowships at Neurosciences Research Australia in Sydney and at the Perron Institute in Perth. She works in general neurology, participates in the state-wide Telestroke service and has experience with injecting botulinum toxin for movement disorders and spasticity.
