The Trauma Service has a team of dedicated subspecialist surgeons in trauma surgery, who work closely with colleagues from other specialities, nursing and allied health.
Steven Dunjey – State Director of Trauma
Professor Stephen Dunjey (Steve) is an Emergency Physician with over three decades of experience, having served as a Consultant at RPH since 1993. Alongside his tenure at RPH, he has contributed over 10 years of service at both the Women’s Hospital and Kalgoorlie Hospital. Since 2022, he has assumed the role of State Director. Professor Dunjey holds a sub-specialty in Ultrasound, completing his training in 2007 (DDU), and he is particularly passionate about teaching. He has received recognitions including the College for Emergency Medicine's Teaching Excellence Award and a Lifetime Service Award. Additionally, he serves as the Co-Director of Emergency Medicine for WA Country Health Service (WACHS) and holds a professorship with an educational focus at St John of God, Murdoch.
Dieter Weber – Head of Service, Trauma Services
Dieter Weber is the Head of Department of General Surgery and current head of the Royal Perth Hospital Trauma Service. He is clinical engaged as Consultant Surgeon both in Trauma and General Surgery.
After graduating from the University of Western Australia, he completed his General Surgery Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He subsequently subspecialised into Trauma Surgery in Newcastle.
He is a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of Western Australia, and also holds an adjunct position with the University of Newcastle in his role as a course coordinator for the Masters of Traumatology. He has authored and instructed on various trauma and emergency surgery related courses, and is engaged in research in these fields. He is a Board member of the World Society of Emergency Surgery, and is also a member of the European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery and the International Surgical Society. With the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he serves as the Deputy Chair of the Clinical Examinations Committee. He chairs the Post fellowship Education and Training Committee for Trauma Surgery, and is an executive committee member for the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Surgery of Trauma as Supervisor of Post-Fellowship Training.
Trauma Case Manager
Trauma case management involves:
- Providing timely, well-coordinated care for trauma patients and their families throughout their journey
- Discharge planning
- Conducting patient education on injuries and follow-up.
- Intervening at key points during the patient's inpatient stay to improve quality care and conserve hospital resources.
- Having expert knowledge of trauma care and the consequences of injury to the human body
Sheryl Jonescu - Trauma Case Manager
Sheryl Jonescu is the Trauma Case Manager at Royal Perth Hospital, and also works at the WA Trauma Training and Education Unit as a Statewide Nurse Educator.
She has completed her Masters of Clinical Nursing at Curtin University in 2008 and is a Trauma Nursing Core Course Instructor and Faculty member. She is a Course Coordinator for EMST, DSTC and the Emergency Trauma Management course and is also a Royal College of Surgeons, Trauma Verification Member. She was previously involved with Medical Air as a retrieval flight nurse and at St John Ambulance Event Services as a Divisional Nursing Officer managing and providing first aid for events.
Sheryl has a keen interest in disaster and is an Australian Medical Assistance team member (AUSMAT) and was part of the WA Medical Assistance team for CHOGM, WA Leavers and the Exmouth Solar Eclipse deployment in 2023.At a hospital level she has been involved in the multiple Code Brown events including Christmas Island and Ashmore reef disasters. Sheryl is a member of Australian and New Zealand Association for the Surgery of Trauma (ANZAST).
Hayley Burgess
Hayley Burgess is the second Trauma Case Manager at Royal Perth Hospital and a Clinical Nurse in the Emergency Department. Hayley has a Postgraduate Certificate in Critical Care – Emergency Nursing from 2019 and brings extensive expertise of primary trauma assessment and management.
Before her current role, she worked as the Postgraduate Staff Development Nurse at RPH ED, demonstrating her commitment to patient care and the professional development of her colleagues. Hayley's ongoing passion for the trauma patient journey is evident in her impactful roles within the hospital.
